Beneath the lamplight

I stood beneath the lamplight where the sparrow used to sing
Was just across the river, from where the bells did ring
I was cold an hungry and the night was drawing near
And in the dark it happened, an angel did appear
My angel of love

She took me by the hand and said I think you oughta come
I know a place where we can talk of things that should be done
We wandered off into the night to where I’ll never know
And on that golden blanket she made me take a vow
My angel of love

Noone knows the way to change the morrow
Maybe there’s an answer in the past
I believe that somewhere there’s a reason
But don’t ask

When morning broke I saw that all she’d left me was a card
No number or address just a solitary heart
I wandered back to where we’d met and waited till the night
But knowing that my angel was gone she’d taken flight
My angel of love

Now and then I think about the few days that we had
All the things she showed and told the good and yes the bad
Finding something in those times to treasure and to bless
My angel gave me life again and life gave me the rest
An angel called love

So if you find an angel, don’t let them slip away
Hold on tight with all your might and try to make them stay
Life holds many questions and many answers too
I can only pray that an angel comes to you
An angel of love

Noone knows the way to change the morrow
Maybe there’s an answer in the past
I believe that somewhere there’s a reason
But don’t ask - ask the angel called love.
Ask the angel called love.
Ask the angel called love.
